One Scientist's Journey to the Ocean Floor

Nereus Image: Courtesy of Advanced Imaging and Visualization Laboratory, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

Name: Jill McDermott
Title: Ph.D. candidate, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
Location: Woods Hole, Mass.

Where will you be sailing?
We?ll sail onboard the research vessel Atlantis to the Mid-Cayman Spreading Center, which harbors the world?s deepest chain of volcanoes. It?s south of the Cay?man Islands and west of Jamaica and Cuba. We first visited the site two years ago with a submarine called Nereus, and we found evidence of three new hydro?thermal vents. On this cruise, we want to send our remotely operated underwater vehicle [ROV] Jason down to do a sam??p?ling mission at one of those vents and at another one discovered in 2010 by a team led by the U.K.?s National Oceanography Center, Southampton.

Tell me more about the area you?ll be exploring.
The Mid-Cayman Spreading Center is a really exciting place to work, partly because of the diversity of the environ?ment there. It?s an ultraslow-spreading ridge, which means it has a low level of volcanic activity and a lot of tectonic activity. There are many different types of rocks, from volcanic basalt to peri?do?tite, a rock that?s more like the mantle and gets pulled up from deeper within the earth. The rock composition around a vent is a big driver of that vent?s chem?istry, and what I hope to understand is the chemistry of these two systems and how the pressure and rocks can cause the chemistry to change.

How do you find a hydrothermal vent?
We use a sensor that looks for the reducing potential of the water?how much oxygen is present. A deep-sea hydrothermal vent emits water that contains very low levels of oxygen. That low-oxygen water comes up from the vent, and as it drifts along we can detect the plume.

Once you find a vent, what do you need to do to sample it?
We?re sending Jason on the sampling mission with four titanium bottles that will hold water samples; other people are sending bioboxes and things to put sulfide structures in. Jason is a workhorse. It?s a really powerful sub?marine. It can stay down for more than 24 hours and has strong manip?ulator arms.

What else are you hoping to find?
Our studies seek to extend the known limits of life on earth. One of our goals is to understand whether or not organic molecules can be synthesized abiotically [without living organisms] in deep-sea hydrothermal vents, which carries im?plications for the origin and suste?nance of life on the early earth and will inform future missions searching for life on other planetary bodies.

Climate change may have caused Mayan civilization's collapse

For unknown reasons, the ancient Mayan civilization then disintegrated more than a millennium ago. The number of people declined catastrophically to a fraction of the empire's former size, and the ruins of its great cities are now largely overgrown by jungle.

The collapse of the ancient Mayan civilization may have been linked to relatively modest dry spells, researchers now say.

The?ancient Mayan empire?once stretched across an area about the size of Texas, with cities and fields occupying what is now southern Mexico and northern Central America, including the countries of Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and Honduras. The height of the Mayan empire, known as the Classic period, reached from approximately A.D. 250 to at least A.D. 900.

The ancient Maya had what was arguably the most advanced civilization in the Americas. For instance, they made dramatic breakthroughs in astronomy that helped them very accurately predict where the moon and other planets would be in the sky centuries in the future. They also left behind many books and stone inscriptions regarding the?stories of their gods?and the history of their divine kings and queens.

For unknown reasons, the ancient Mayan civilization then disintegrated more than a millennium ago. The number of people declined catastrophically to a fraction of the empire's former size, and the ruins of its great cities are now largely overgrown by jungle. [Photos: First Glimpse into a Mayan Tomb]

Scientists have long drawn connections between?the slow decline of the ancient Maya, which took about two centuries, "to climate change, and especially to drought," said researcher Mart?n Medina-Elizalde at the Yucatan Center for Scientific Research in Mexico. "No sound estimates had been made about the severity of this drought, but some have suggested extreme scenarios."

To see how much rainfall the ancient Maya saw before the demise of their civilization, the researchers combined the four most detailed records of past climate changes known regarding the civilization's collapse ? three from nearby lakes and one from a stalagmite, a mineral formation that grows upward from a cave floor. This helped develop a model of "the region's balance between evaporation and rainfall," Medina-Elizalde said.

The scientists found that rainfall in the region decreased episodically for periods as long as a decade at a time.

"Our results show rather modest rainfall reductions between times when the Classic Maya civilization flourished and its collapse between 800 to 950," said researcher Eelco Rohling, a paleoclimatologist at the University of Southampton in England. "These reductions amount to only 25 to 40 percent in annual rainfall, but they were large enough for evaporation to become dominant over rainfall, and open water availability was rapidly reduced. The data suggest that the main cause was a decrease in summer storm activity."

The timing of these dry spells might help explain why modest reductions in rainfall still may have helped cause the demise of a well-established civilization.

"Summer was the main season for cultivation and replenishment of Maya freshwater storage systems and there are no rivers in the Yucatan lowlands," Rohling said.

It appeared to Rohling that the ancient Maya had become reliant on continuous rainfall supplies, and had stretched the capacity of their farmlands to a fine limit based on normal levels of rain. "Then, even a rather subtle climatic change was enough to create serious problems," he told LiveScience. "Societal disruptions and abandonment of cities are likely consequences of?critical water shortages, especially because there seems to have been a rapid repetition of multiyear droughts."

Rohling emphasized they are not saying that climate ended the ancient Mayan civilization. "We are documenting that there was a reduction in rainfall, and that reservoirs of water were evaporating," he said. This may in turn have led to societal unrest or diseases or both, "which are more likely to explain the actual collapse of society."

The scientists noted that the droughts they saw during the demise of the ancient Mayan civilization were similar in severity to those projected by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for the near future in the same region. [10 Surprising Results of Global Warming]

"There are differences too, but the warning is clear ? what seems like a minor reduction in water availability may lead to important, long-lasting problems," Medina-Elizalde said. "This problem is not unique to the Yucatan Peninsula, but applies to all regions in similar settings where evaporation is high. Today, we have the benefit of awareness, and we should act accordingly."

The scientists detailed their findings in the Feb. 24 issue of the journal Science.

How to Build an Igloo

February 24, 2012 6:30 AM

Material: In wind-packed snow, shovel a trench to facilitate cutting the first block. Using a snow knife or snow saw, cut a block 12 inches wide, 24 inches long, and 18 deep. Remove the block from the trench and repeat.

Foundation: Mark the center of the igloo with a stick or ski pole, then trace a circle 6 to 10 feet in diameter. Position blocks along it, using a snow knife to miter the ends for a tight fit.

Construction: Cut a ramp that starts between two blocks and extends halfway around the bottom row. Bevel the tops of the blocks along an imaginary line from the outer edge of the blocks to the igloo's center (1). Trim snow from the bottom of the blocks in higher rows so they touch only at the corners (2), and bevel the tops along the angle of sight to the igloo's center. Stagger the blocks.

Exit Strategy: Dig an exit tunnel, ideally beneath a downhill-facing wall.

Last Steps: Slide the top block (3) sideways through the opening, turn horizontally, and drop into place. Chink gaps between blocks with loose snow. Poke holes for ventilation.

Nurses Critical to Fulfilling Patients' End-of-life Wishes - NurseZone

By Debra Wood, RN, contributor

February 24, 2012 - Americans have a tradition of making up their minds and carrying out their desires, except when it comes to the care they receive at the end of life.

?There are issues with resolving patients? desires for end-of-life care and what ends up happening at the time of the death, and there are many factors that contribute to that,? said Jennie Roberts, RN, CCM, MBA, chief nursing officer at Evercare Hospice & Palliative Care?UnitedHealth Group, in Denver.

A recent survey from the California Healthcare Foundation highlights how far apart people?s desires are from reality. Seventy percent of respondents said they would prefer to die at home, but in 2009, only 32 percent of deaths in California occurred at home. Nearly 80 percent of those surveyed said they definitely or probably would like to talk with a doctor about end-of-life care, but only 7 percent have actually had that conversation.

The findings are not a fluke. Kathy Brandt, senior vice president, office of education and engagement at the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) in Alexandria, Va., said the numbers are consistent with other studies.

?Most people do not want to think about their end of life,? Brandt said. ?Death is a hard reality for anyone to face. That?s an ongoing issue health-care practitioners are faced with--how do you have those conversations with people??

The time to think it through is before a crisis.

Advance directives

A large majority of Californians, 82 percent, said in the foundation?s survey that it was important to have end-of-life wishes in writing, yet only 23 percent admitted having done so.

Brandt encourages nurses to start close to home by making sure they and their family and friends have completed advance directives.

?Everyone should have a health care proxy, no matter what age, because you need to have someone there to make decisions and honor your wishes,? said Barbara Maffia, RN, nurse manager of the ICU at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. ?Life is strange, and you can go at the drop of a hat and not be able to make a decision.?

It is never too early for adults to discuss end-of-life care. Brandt said any life change, whether marriage, divorce or childbirth, provides an opportunity for advance care planning and updating of documents.

?People can choose to do everything, nothing or something in between, but at least it?s your choice when you are writing down your wishes, and that?s important,? Brandt said. ?Otherwise, someone will make the decision for you, whether a doctor or a family member.?

Nurses changing outcomes

?There are millions of nurses in the United States, and if everyone took a moment to say, ?Is there any way I can help you with your advance directives,? we would revolutionize the ability of patients to think about how they will think this through with loved ones,? said Terry Fulmer, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, dean of Bouve College of Health Sciences at Northeastern University in Boston. ?Mobilizing the nursing workforce could set the nation on a path to embrace all of the opportunities palliative care can provide.?

Fulmer acknowledged that some nurses may not think discussing advance directives is within their scope of practice, but she maintains that initiating that conversation and helping people create the documentation is within a nurse?s scope of practice and should be as routine as asking about immunizations.

?It is for us to take hold of this and lead,? said Fulmer, explaining that nurses often think someone else will do it, but that?s not likely. And often, the nurse is the best person to ask the question, because the nurse will have the closest relationship with the patient.

NHPCO?s Caring Connections?website?offers materials with suggestions about how to initiate the conversation among family members and forms to document one?s end-of-life desires. The materials are available at no charge for personal use.

Advocating for patients

Frequently, the physician and other members of the care team are so focused on curative care that discussions about end-of-life care are postponed. A recent multisite, U.S. study reported in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that even among Stage 4 lung and colorectal cancer patients, talking about end-of-life options did not take place until late in the course of treatment, a median of 33 days before death, and often occurred with a provider other than the treating oncologist.

?The timing of the discussions and the skill sets around those discussions are not in a lot of clinicians? repertoires,? Roberts said. ?This is not a discussion you have one time. There needs to be repeated discussions, not only with the patient but with the family.?

That conversation should include the consequences associated with each option, and even after the patient voices his or her desires, it?s important to check that the person still feels the same way as time goes on and the disease progresses, Roberts said.

Mary T. Boylston, RN, MSN, Ed.D, AHN-BC, professor of nursing at Eastern University in St. Davids, Penn., added that death is often a taboo subject with physicians, ?because it can mean that they have ?failed? to save the patient. Yet, ego aside, abiding by a person?s final wishes is a tremendous gift.?

Sometimes, patients will open up to nurses, and the nurse must be ready to actively listen to the patient?s desires and preferences, said former hospice nurse Lisa Erbstoesser, RN, president of See Me Communications in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

?Nurses spend more time [with patients] and are often able to have more candid conversations with folks,? Brandt added. ?Patients often express fears and uncertainties to nurses that they might not feel comfortable doing with doctors.?

To properly handle the discussion, Erbstoesser said, nurses also must become knowledgeable about hospice care and palliative care. She called hospice care more patient-centered than most medical models and advised nurses to suggest it to the treating physician when it?s appropriate.

Once the patient gets to hospice, those nurses will regularly talk about end-of-life options and how to accomplish that, said Susan Shayne, BSN, RN-BC, with BAYADA Hospice in Vermont. The admission packet includes a Critical Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment form, a do-not-resuscitate form kept in the home and advance directive forms. The hospice can fax that information to a physician if a patient goes into the hospital.

What goes wrong?

Even when people document their wishes, things can go wrong. Patients may want to die at home, yet they or a loved one will call 911 and seek hospital care when the patient?s condition starts to deteriorate.

?People panic, and emotions sometimes get in the way,? Shayne said.

Boylston called dying at home a gift, adding that ?besides the emotional turmoil of letting go, physical care of a person who is suffering can take a toll on family. Therefore, it is important that families and health care providers meet with one another to determine the plan for the final hours.?

If a patient sees that their care is overwhelming to the family, they will often offer to be moved to another level of care, said Rose M. Rosenberg, RN, MA, vice president of hospice care in Westchester & Putnam in Tarrytown, N.Y.

?There are times that the caregivers just wear out and are unable to handle the day-to-day care that is needed for a patient,? Rosenberg added. ?They call 911 or ask to have the patient transferred to the hospital or a nursing home for inpatient care or a five-day respite stay.?

Once in the hospital, they may end up on a ventilator or receiving other treatments in an intensive care unit that precludes a death at home.

Without a health care proxy, some family members will want everything done and others are in disagreement. Maffia said that when that happens, the case is referred to the ethics committee, which discusses options. Nurses will try to educate and support family members.

?If you don?t discuss treatment options and don?t document them, things may not go the way you want them to,? Shayne said. ?In the medical community, we tend to treat, treat, treat.?

UK suspect in Iran missile plot handed over to US

LONDON (AP) ? A retired British businessman accused of plotting to sell missile components to Iran is in transit to the United States to face charges.

Christopher Tappin is expeced to arrive in the United States on Friday afternoon after failing to overturn an extradition order.

Tappin faces charges in El Paso, Texas, over allegations that he offered in 2006 to sell specialized batteries for Hawk missiles for $25,000 to undercover American agents posing as Iranians.

The 65-year-old Tappin faces up to 35 years in jail if convicted.

He denies wrongdoing, saying he was the victim of a sting operation.

Upon his arrival at London's Heathrow Airport to be handed over to U.S. officials Friday, the white-haired Tappin said he was being treated in a disgraceful manner.

Tappin said he is receiving harsher treatment than Abu Qatada, a radical, Jordanian-born cleric accused of ties to al-Qaida who recently received bail in London.

"I have no rights," Tappin told reporters as his wife looked on in tears just before their parting. "Abu Qatada is walking the streets of London today and we cannot extradite him. He has more rights than I have. If I was a terrorist, I would not be going to America. I think it's a shame, a disgrace."

Is Student Loan Debt The Next Financial Crisis? | Stock Market ...

There?s no doubt that we?re all still a little sensitive when it comes to the economy. Although it?s been nearly four years since the start of, what we now call, The Great Recession, the world still hasn?t let down its guard. The new warning making its way through the financial media is the rising student loan burden. Some believe that this could bring down the economy in much the same way as the 2008 and 2009 mortgage crisis, but is that true?

Background
For generations, young people have heard that the only path to success is through a college education. College remains the accepted path for 68.1% of high school graduates, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

For most students today, student loans are the way to pay the expenses of a higher education. The average student loan debt for a college student in 2010 was $25,250, up 5%

Conservation Conversation in Clay

One of the most fascinating aspects of art is that two artists can use the same exact materials and create vastly different works. Last week, I posted an interview with Heather Knight, an artist who creates abstract porcelain tiles inspired by nature?s patterns and textures. Today, I introduce Kate MacDowell, another artist working in unglazed porcelain whose work is also inspired by what she sees in nature. Whereas Knight?s abstractions of nature create a comfortable distance from which we can lose ourselves in the beauty of the repetitive patterns she creates, Kate MacDowell?s sculptures blend the hyper-real with the surreal, pulling us in with exquisite detail and then shocking us with an unexpected and uncomfortable reality. I was initially drawn to interview MacDowell because of the striking anatomical nature of her work; I had not expected to discover her deep regard for the environment and conservation efforts.

"Casualty" by Kate MacDowell, 2009

"Casualty" by Kate MacDowell, 2009

Ok, rapidfire: How long have you been creating art professionally? What type of work do you do? What?s your background?
I?ve been a sculpting full-time for about five years. I work in hand-built porcelain clay, and my work often explores our problematic relationship with the natural environment. I started studying ceramics in evening classes at the local art school and community college shortly after returning from living and traveling overseas in India and Europe. I have a Masters in Teaching English Literature, and in the past have produced websites for high-tech companies, taught high school English, and worked at a meditation retreat center in India.

Your work reveals an intimate familiarity with anatomy. Do you have formal medical or biological training?
No, though I have taken a class in figure sculpting that focused on human anatomy. I study scientific drawings, especially of skeletal systems, and both professional and snapshot photographs of the animals I?m sculpting. Sometimes I?ll watch online youtube videos of animals to see how they move and get a sense of their posture at rest.

What inspires you as an artist?
Conceptually, environmental case studies based on online reading about threatened species and environmental impacts such as climate change. Visually, people?s snapshots of road-kill up on the web, contemporary artwork I come across online, and baroque marble sculpture. I also create pieces spurred on by my own feelings of solastalgia. This word, coined by philosopher Glenn Albrecht, describes the palpable sense of dislocation and loss that people feel when they perceive changes to their local environment as harmful?it?s a form of psychic or existential distress caused by environmental change.

"Serpentine" by Kate MacDowell, 2009

"Serpentine" by Kate MacDowell, 2009

How and why do you incorporate science or the natural world into your art?
I find the complexity of natural forms both inside and out beautiful and interesting, and I think biodiversity loss and climate change is a multifaceted tragedy worth exploring this way. Visuals can communicate so much, yet still be open to multiple and contradictory interpretations. So even though my starting point might be the introduction of the myxomatosis virus to control pest rabbits, or pollution in lakes affecting the sexual organs of alligators, the viewer might create a completely different narrative to explain the images.

In your experience, is realism treated with disdain in the art world? Why do you think this is? Does the surreal nature of your work allow you to transcend this attitude?
Not necessarily. It seems to be that narrative realism is perhaps more looked down upon, though, and is embraced more by the underground art/pop surrealist/new contemporary movement than mainstream contemporary art ? but there are plenty of exceptions to this. I think that both the unusual material, surrealism, and dark subject matter of my work makes it different from a lot of mainstream realist animal sculpture and I?m sure that has helped with some galleries, buyers and media coverage.

If you could travel in time to any point in the universe?s history ? forward or back ? where would you go and what would you see/do?
Well, assuming I could take modern medicine with me and choose my gender for maximum freedom of movement, or even better yet be Emerson?s transparent eyeball, hmm? I think seeing the Pleistocene megafauna in the Americas or Asia would have been incredible, but I would be worried about getting eaten. I also think pre-Colombian North America would have been amazing to experience and document, or even the American West prior to the first railroads. I would have liked to see passenger pigeons cover the sky.

"Entangled" by Kate MacDowell, 2010

"Entangled" by Kate MacDowell, 2010

Any practical tips for aspiring artists on how to make a living doing art?
First, figure out what your niche is artistically; experiment until you find what you really feel passionate about making before looking for the market that will embrace it. The diversity of the market and the ways you can be visually creative are really pretty infinite right now with the breakdown between categories such as fine art/fashion/industrial design/film and TV. During your growth time create each piece to the best of your ability, both thematically and technically, even if it means slower production of work and fewer pieces to sell or show initially. Trying for quality helped me grow faster than trying for quantity. Try to find a consistent routine for making work (place, time, other people around you), that supports you over time and gets you through the rough spots. Get great photos of your work and have them online.

To what extent do you use social media to promote your work?
I spend a lot more time on social media for fun than for promoting my own work, although I know a lot of artists in the pop surrealism/new contemporary field who are very heavily connected to their buyers and fans through social media and keep up an ongoing dialogue. I do have a website which I edit and keep up to date myself, and I post images of every piece I finish on it in a form that?s easy for bloggers and tumblrs to borrow. I spread info through Twitter, Facebook and e-mail blasts myself, but after that I mostly let social media do its own thing and spread the photos I have out there ? once you get picked up by design blogs and they start tweeting it becomes an infinitely perpetuating cycle. It?s been very good for me for the most part and brought me to the attention of international buyers, galleries, and print and online media. The key, as I mentioned earlier, is to have great, eye-catching photos, and of course make work that people are interested in looking at and discussing.

"Quiet as a mouse" by Kate MacDowell, 2011

"Quiet as a mouse" by Kate MacDowell, 2011

If you were conducting this interview, what question would you ask and what would your answer be!?
Hmm, I can?t really think of anything pressing, but some people ask what my dream art assignment would be:

If I had funding, a large warehouse or gallery space, and a crew of volunteers and artist collaborators I would create an installation of the by-catch of a deep-sea trawler. Basically I?d like to create a pile of life-sized dead sea-life out of fired porcelain or white clay, the approximate volume of a school bus, with here and there a brightly colored orange roughy visible, the actual intended ?catch? which is not discarded.

Sounds incredible and worthwhile. Any donors willing to commission it?!

How to baby-proof your home theater

By Sarah Cavill, Techlicious.com

We?ve all heard it: The clatter of the remote control hitting the hard wood floor. The grind of the disc tray on the DVD player being forcibly closed, often with something in it other than a disc. The gleeful laugh of a toddler that has our phone and is running away with it. Many issues, when it comes to protecting our technology or home theater systems are just annoyances, but others are genuine safety concerns ? for your child and your electronics.

Fortunately, there are many easy to use baby-proofing measures you can take to keep your new crawler or worse, your new climber, safe and sound while also protecting your technology.

Safety 1st

1. Secure your TV
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, between 8,000 and 10,000 children are treated in emergency rooms each year because of tip-over injuries, and televisions are major offenders. Flat-screen televisions are front- heavy and often perched on small lightweight bases. To carefully secure your TV you can secure it with a Prograde Flat Screen TV Lock.?($29.32 on Amazon.com).

2. Protect?your components
All those flashing lights, sliding trays, and buttons ? how they love buttons ? make components like Blu-ray players, DVRs, cable boxes and iPod docks very tempting for sticky fingers. You can get an entertainment unit that holds your TV and electronics, with glass or frosted doors that close, like the TOBO TV panel with media storage ($319 on?Ikea.com). You can secure the doors with childproof locks and secure the unit to the wall. Most remotes will work through glass.

Sewell

For those that don?t work through glass, or if your unit has wooden doors, you can get an external remote sensor like the Sewell InjectIR ($44.95 on Amazon.com) that sees IR commands from all of your remotes and transmits them to your components via HDMI (see the illustration).

You can also get a clear plastic shield that covers the front of your components. The DVD/Stereo Guard by Parent Units ($12.74 on Amazon.com) keeps wee hands from pushing buttons, but is easily removable for adult access.

3.?Cover your outlets and power strips
Though the standard plug covers are quite handy and inconspicuous for plugs you rarely use, they are finger-breaking to remove. A product like the Kidco Outlet Plug Cover ($7.25 on Amazon.com), keeps kids off of the plug, allows you to shorten the cord and it?s easily opened for use. Since most of us are plugging in our entire lives, power strips are an issue as well. A Power Strip Cover from Safety 1st ($7.99 on Amazon.com) keep curious hands from yanking at the plugs.

Wiremold

4. Organize your wires
Hide cords behind cord concealers like the Wiremold CordMate II Cord Organizer ($24.99 on Crutchfield.com) if you?re running cables along a wall. Directly behind the TV, manage cables with zip ties or cover them with a wrap like the Monster Cable-It Wire Management System, which comes in three colors and several lengths ($12.20 for 8 feet on Amazon.com).

5. Protect your remote control
The most oft-dropped item deserves a little protection too. A Remote Control Cover from Remote Wraps ($15.99 on RemoteWraps.com) protects the device, the device?s battery door, and your furniture from getting banged up.

There are many baby-proofing companies that will come in to your home and assess your needs. Make sure when researching a company that they provide full service for home theaters, and not just plugs and cords.

Thinking outside sustainability's box at the intersection of art and science

VANCOUVER, British Columbia Science is about facts, but the science of sustainability also involves questions underpinned by values.

With this in mind, a Michigan State University environmental sociologist will ask scientists to consider how art can provoke people to consider their perceptions of sustainability at this year's annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

"Good decisions about the complex issues of sustainability have to be grounded in science, but science alone isn't sufficient to make decisions that also involve our values and ethical concerns," said Thomas Dietz, MSU assistant vice president for environmental research. "We have to think about things that aren't usually part of our everyday routines, and challenging routine thinking has been one of the roles of art in our society."

Dietz, a member of MSU's Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability, and Eugene Rosa, Boeing Distinguished Professor of Environmental Sociology and affiliated professor of fine arts at Washington State University, have organized a symposium, "Science, Sustainability and the Arts" at 8 a.m. on Feb. 17.

Symposium speakers are Joe Zammit-Lucia, fine art photographer, Sacha Kagan, sociologist at Leuphana University who studies how art affects people's understanding of sustainability, and David Maggs, classical concert pianist.

Zammit-Lucia's large-format portraits of apes, tigers and elephants have changed perceptions of the animals, helping people see them as more familiar and less alien. Kagan's installations, films and performance art focus on the culture of sustainability and how art can help achieve sustainability. Maggs is keenly interested in how his art can further his environmental concerns and helped create Earth To Human, an eco-travel project in Newfoundland that he also hosts.

"All the speakers are working artists who also are studying sustainability science," Dietz said. "We're hoping people come away from the session realizing that art doesn't have only aesthetic worth. Art can provoke thinking and actually change people's perceptions of the complex issues associated with sustainability science. When we're considering questions about preserving biodiversity versus creating jobs, art can help us examine our values and have a discussion that's broader than just scientific facts."
