Staples 3-Day Apple Event: Up to $60 off a 3rd Gen iPad, $100 off MacBook Air, Pro and iMac (9/1)

If you're gearing up for back to school and want to head back with the latest and greatest in Apple products, Staples is helping you save a bit more by discounting the new iPad, MacBook Air, Pro and iMac. Until September 1, you can save a little extra on the aforementioned Apple products which is always worth noting as they rarely go on sale. Here's a rundown of what's on sale:

new iPad

MacBook Air

MacBook Pro

iMac

While everyone has their preference, if you're entrenched in the Apple ecosystem and need an upgrade, it would be hard to ignore the discounts above. We would have loved to see the iPod Touch go on sale as well but the trade-in events at FutureShop and Best Buy occur often enough that it's not too big of a deal.

The deals are live now but expire on September 1. Free shipping is available $50.

The mobile phone or mobile, also called a wireless, cellular phone, cell phone (AKA: cellphone), or cell, is a long-range, portable electronic device used for mobile communication that uses a network of specialized base stations known as cell sites. In addition to the standard voice function of a telephone, current mobile phones can support many additional services, and accessories, such as SMS for text messaging, email, packet switching for access to the Internet, and MMS for sending and receiving photos and video. Most current mobile phones connect to a cellular network of base stations (cell sites), which is in turn interconnected to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) (the exception is satellite phones). Onefone U.S. Patent 887,357 for a wireless telephone was issued in 1908 to Nathan B. Stubblefield of Murray, Kentucky. He applied this to "cave radio" telephones and not directly to cellular telephony as the term is currently understood.[1] Cells for mobile phone base stations were invented in 1947 by Bell Labs engineers at AT&T and further developed by Bell Labs during the 1960s. Radiophones have a long and varied history going back to Reginald Fessenden's invention and shore-to-ship demonstration of radio telephony, through the Second World War with military use of radio telephony links and civil services in the 1950s, while hand-held cellular radio devices have been available since 1973. Due to their low establishment costs and rapid deployment, mobile phone networks have since spread rapidly throughout the world, outstripping the growth of fixed telephony. Onefone In 1945, the zero generation (0G) of mobile telephones was introduced. 0G mobile phones, such as Mobile Telephone Service, were not officially categorized as mobile phones, since they did not support the automatic change of channel frequency during calls, which allows the user to move from one cell (the base station coverage area) to another cell, a feature called "handover". Onefone In 1983, Motorola DynaTAC was the second approved mobile phone by FCC. In 1984, Bell Labs invented such a "call handoff" feature, which allowed mobile-phone users to travel through several cells during the same conversation. Motorola is widely considered to be the inventor of the first practical mobile phone for handheld use in a non-vehicle setting. Using a modern, if somewhat heavy portable handset, Motorola manager Martin Cooper made the first call on a handheld mobile phone on April 3, 1973.

Sony's VPL-HW50ES projector revealed at IFA, ships in October

Sony's VPLHW50ES projector revealed at IFA, brings home 4K and 3D in October

Slotting in above the VPL-HW30ES, this VPL-HW50ES uses a version of the same technology seen in the VW1000ES to process images for 4K does not do 4K at all and of course supports 3D. We're all very familiar with the company's SXRD projectors by now but if you need more information the press release is after the break. While we know these are due to ship across Europe in both black and white by the end of October, what you won't find, at least so far, is a price tag. We'll keep our eyes peeled at CEDIA next week for more information.

Update: Whoops, no, this is not a part of Sony's all-4K everything push, and brings merely 1080p resolution with some fancy image processing tech. We're now not quite as excited to see it, but 1,700 lumens of brightness, built-in 3D transmitter and wider lens shift range aren't too disappointing.

Most Americans Not Happy at Work: Yahoo! Finance/Parade Survey ...

Follow The Daily Ticker on Facebook!

In an economy where millions are unemployed for months or even longer, you might think that those who are employed would be feeling good about their job, maybe even lucky. Think again. A joint survey from PARADE magazine and Yahoo! Finance of 26,000 Americans found that almost 60 percent would choose a different career.

"Now we have the McJob that for so many people in the economy goes nowhere," says The Daily Ticker's Henry Blodget. "The whole idea is that [those jobs] are a stepping stone to something else, and it never is. You can understand why they would be unhappy with that. "

It's not just the jobs like those at McDonald's that's upsetting America workers, says Aaron Task of The Daily Ticker. "There are also people working white collar jobs?. and feeling like they're just on a treadmill, not getting anywhere."

Maybe that's because they're not good at playing office politics. Just over 50 percent of those surveyed said workers get ahead because of internal politics. Twenty-seven percent cited hard work and the rest credited initiative or creativity for getting ahead.

Despite their unhappiness with work, many Americans expect to work past age 65, according to the survey. Only 33 percent of respondents expect to retire before they turn 65 years old and 43 percent plan on retiring between ages 65 and 70. That's almost 80 percent by the time they turn 71.

"That's a tough number," says Task given what's going on with people having to work longer because of their savings situation. "If you don't have any savings, how will you retire at any age? "

There will probably still be social security, says Blodget, "but you'll probably get less than what we have now and the retirement age will probably go up."

The survey didn't have details about respondents' retirement savings but found that 53 percent of workers had just three months worth of savings to tide them over if they lost their jobs tomorrow. Another 15 percent had enough savings to last four to six months. Perhaps that's why more than half said they would choose a 5 percent raise over two weeks more of vacation.

Tell us what you think! Are you happy with your current career?

ASUS outs dockable Windows 8 Vivo Tab and Vivo Tab RT

ASUS outs dockable Windows 8 Vivo Tab and Vivo Tab RT

It looks like IFA will be where many Windows 8 devices shown back at Computex get (more) official. Exhibit A is ASUS, which today pulled the curtains on the Vivo Tab and the Vivo Tab RT, previously known as the ASUS Tablet 810 and the ASUS Tablet 600, respectively. There's still no pricing info available, but the company has filled in some of the remaining spec gaps.

As we previously knew, the Vivo Tab sports an 11.6-inch IPS display with a 1,366 x 768 resolution and supports a Wacom digitizer input in addition to 10-point multitouch. The tablet runs an Intel Atom CPU with 2GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The Vivo Tab measures 0.33 inches thick and weighs in at 1.5 pounds. There's also an 8-megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash, plus a 2-megapixel shooter up front. As we learned back in Taipei as well, an NFC sensor will be on board.

Then there's the Vivo Tab RT, which is slightly smaller, at 0.33 inches thick and 1.1 pounds, and with a 10.1-inch screen. Like its non-RT brother, it boasts an IPS display with a 1,366 x 768 resolution, but it runs a Tegra 3 processor and a 12-core GPU, with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. The RT tablet includes the same cameras and NFC sensor as the Vivo Tab.

Of course, these two slates also come with a Transformer-like dock, which adds a full QWERTY keyboard, trackpad, two USB ports and a second battery. The missing element to this equation is still pricing and availability: check back for those details, and in the meantime hit up the press release below the break.

Tropical Storm Isaac expected to be hurricane soon: NHC

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Some two dozen topless women protested in a New York City park on a hot, sweaty Sunday as part of what they called "National Go-Topless Day" to draw attention to inequality in topless rights between men and women. There were topless men in the park, too, but nobody paid them much attention, a disparity, organizers said, that demonstrated the need for the event. The topless women drew crowds of onlookers who took pictures and video with their cell phones. ...

Slow-cooker pulled pork (and my slap-dash barbeque sauce) | Chilli ...

I?m a massive fan of meat. Every which way: oven-roasted, pan-seared, slow-cooked, fast-cooked, rare-bloody-gorgeousness and blackened charred sticky edges. Mostly, I like my meat barbequed.

On my quest for the perfect?barbequed meat feast, I paid a visit to London?s most popular barbeque joint,?Pitt Cue Co in Soho a week ago and inhaled the most succulent pulled pork I?d ever tasted.

So, I decided to have a go at?some pulled pork in my own kitchen, but approached my?recipe from a different angle ? by firing up my trusty slow-cooker?

    Slow-cooker pulled pork

Before I embarked on my great homemade pulled pork adventure, I researched various slow-cooker pulled pork recipes online and realised that the best approach was by ?feel?, and a top-notch homemade barbeque sauce. The best homemade barbeque sauce follows the principle of balancing salty, sweet, sharp and spice, so I gathered my arsenal of pantry sauces ? worstershire sauce, Firkin hot sauce, honey, tomato paste, garlic salt, red wine vinegar, dijon mustard, cumin powder and balsamic vinegar.

I popped to Waitrose and picked up a boneless pork loin roast (discounted by 50%, as my luck would have it!), chopped a big brown onion into chunky slices to line the bottom of the slow-cooker, and threw the pork in with 1.5 litres of chicken stock and a hefty glug of worstershire sauce.

I left the pork to sit and slowly melt in the slow-cooker for nine hours, before pulling the beast out, trimming away the fat and rind, then pulling the pork with two forks until shredded. I reserved a little of the stock to the side, emptied the rest from the slow-cooker and added the pulled pork back in.

    Slow-cooker pulled pork

Now for the fun part. I mixed the various sauces until I got the consistency of a thick barbeque sauce, about two cups worth. I have no idea of the actual quantities, I just balanced the flavours as I went. More salty, more sweet, more sharp, more spice until it was just right.

I stirred the sauce into the pulled pork little-by-little until I got a good coverage of the meat, then added a little ladle of the stock to loosen everything up. I left it to stew for a further two hours on a very low heat and the end result was outstanding.

Pulled pork isn?t right without a sharp and creamy slaw to serve on the side. Again, I didn?t follow any particular recipe, just finely sliced half a fresh red cabbage, grated two big carrots, two tart green apples with the skin on, and a brown onion into a salad bowl, stirring through some salad cream, the juice of two limes and plenty of black pepper. Ta-da! Red cabbage and apple slaw.

Eat this pork piled high on a soft burger bun with plenty of red cabbage?and apple?slaw and a side of little green pickles. You?ll have tons left over, so stash it in the fridge and spoon it fridge-cold onto hot buttered toast for breakfast. Yum.

Kids Birthday Party ? 18 Popular Birthday Themes For Children ...

It?s likely that your tween little girl is going to want to have a sleepover party and this works out in your favor. The probability is she is not likely to want to have a party that begins and concludes at certain times?that is for children. Buy some pink bedding for your guests or pink pillowcases. Locate some jolly roger flags and place them around the party room. Yet another thing you could potentially do is to play the film Pirates of the Caribbean to create the climate for your sleepover. Think about preparing a pepperoni pizza with the pepperoni outlined in the shape of a skull and crossbones? Yes?you should get those brain cells flowing!

Fun Games For Late Night In ? House Party:There are various games exclusively meant for bachelorette party only. Some of the all time favorite games are ?Truth and Dare?, where the chosen one needs either to speak a truth or to accomplish the task given to him. Another fun option is a trivia game called ?How Well Do You Know the Bride?? Choose from such topics as ?The Couple,? ?Her Sex Life,? ?Historical Facts,? ?Her Favorite Things? and ?The Family.? Find out who knows your bride best. Then, card games are also equally enjoyable.

If your teenage kids want to celebrate with a sleepover party, you will not have to worry since there are pre-formatted printable sleepover invitations. You can make use of the format and add in specific details such as names, date, location, RSVP and other important information.

Cake pops are one of the treats kids love! They prefer these sugary delights served up on their birthdays and even when their friends stop by for a sleepover. Cake pops are not just for kids either. People of all ages can enjoy them.

There?s absolutely nothing quite like the festive sensation of preparing food for a party of your friends while relaxing outside on your outdoor patio. All things considered, in relation to summertime fun, a lot of of us have stories of family members get togethers where the hot dogs, burgers and all the alternative great foodstuffs of summer time were prepared on the bbq. But, is that all there is to getting an outdoor patio as part of your house? Of course it isn?t! In this day and age of hastening from A to B, spending time on one?s outdoor patio might not seem important. But what a loss! Look at the several uses of an outdoor patio.

There are also very specific training issues, such as teaching the dog the right places and times to relieve itself. This is another case where it?s important to be realistic and aware of the normal range of canine behavior. It?s not realistic to expect a baby to be housebroken. It?s also perfectly reasonable for more mature dogs to have an accident now and then. It?s not reasonable or appropriate to expect a dog to wait 12 hours for the chance to eliminate. The dog?s needs must be met in order to get the desired behavior from the dog. It?s helpful to put down newspapers in a specific place or somehow make a specific ?rest stop? that a dog can use in the case of emergency.

A sleepover may be a headache at the time, but it gives you a chance to get to know your childs friends. In turn this could make you more trusting of your child. If a sleepover isnt cool enough, suggest that they all come round for pizza and an evening on the Wii.

Photos ? arrange for a photographer to come for a day or evening. Book a time slot for families, children, publicise the event. Arrange a good level of commission on all photographs purchased and ensure plenty of flyers are available to distribute.

During the winter time, the best choice for the party is the barbeque grill. Some even give 10 FREE Sweet 16 Invites with every purchase.

Anti-Obama doc highlights weak Hollywood newcomers

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Hollywood may have run out of summer hits, but an anti-Obama documentary is helping to fill the gap.

Holdover movies easily topped the weekend box office again, led by Sylvester Stallone's "The Expendables 2" at No. 1 for the second-straight weekend with $13.5 million.

The weekend's new wide releases were overshadowed by "2016: Obama's America," which expanded from limited to nationwide release and took in $6.2 million to finish at No. 8.

The documentary is a conservative critique of what the country would look like four years from now if President Barack Obama is re-elected.

Released by Rocky Mountain Pictures, "Obama's America" nearly matched the $6.3 million debut of the No. 7 movie, Joseph Gordon-Levitt's action tale "Premium Rush," a Sony release that played in more than twice as many theaters as the Obama documentary.

The weekend's other new wide releases opened weakly. Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell's road-chase comedy "Hit & Run," released by Open Road Films, debuted at No. 10 with $4.7 million, and the Warner Bros. fright flick "The Apparition" opened at No. 12 with $3 million.

The weak openings are typical of late August, a dumping ground for movies without much audience appeal as the summer blockbuster season winds down and young viewers switch to back-to-school mode.

But with less competition from Hollywood releases, it also opens the door for surprise successes such as "Obama's America."

"It's extremely rare for a documentary to break into the top-10, but August can be a land of opportunity for smaller films," said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. "Also, there's the fact that this is a very conservative film. Normally, it's Michael Moore-branded documentaries, the liberal documentaries that make all the money."

"Obama's America" opened in a handful of theaters in mid-July and did strong business as it gradually widened to more cities. It jumped into the top-10 this weekend as it expanded into 1,091 theaters, leading all other wide releases with an average of $5,717 a cinema.

That's a solid average, especially for a political documentary. But it pales next to the king of political documentaries, Moore's George W. Bush assault "Fahrenheit 9/11," which opened at No. 1 with $23.9 million in June 2004, averaging $27,558 in 868 theaters. "Fahrenheit 9/11" went on to become the top-grossing documentary ever with $119.1 million domestically.

"Obama's America" is based on the book "The Roots of Obama's Rage," written by Dinesh D'Souza, who co-directed the movie with John Sullivan.

The documentary now has climbed to a $9.1 million domestic total, with prospects for strong business as the Republican National Convention unfolds over the next few days.

D'Souza said Sunday that "Obama's America" will expand to more cities in the coming weeks and probably remain in theaters until early October, likely followed by a DVD release in the homestretch leading up to the Nov. 6 election.

Conservatives probably account for most of the documentary's audience so far, D'Souza said. But as with "Fahrenheit 9/11," which drew many conservatives out of curiosity, the attention "Obama's America" now is receiving could prompt left-leaning viewers to check it out, he said.

"What's happening is that people are really hungry for new information about Obama. There really is this sense that he remains an elusive figure," D'Souza said. "Then there's a second sense that the American dream is in the balance, the American dream is at stake, and that gives people a sense of anxiety about where the country is going."

Released by Lionsgate, "The Expendables 2" raised its domestic total to $52.3 million after two weekends.

In limited release, IFC Films' "Sleepwalk with Me" had a huge debut with $77,400 in a single New York City theater. Produced and co-written by Ira Glass of National Public Radio's "This American Life," ''Sleepwalk with Me" stars writer-director Mike Birbiglia in a semi-autobiographical story of a stand-up comic struggling with career and romance, along with bad bouts of sleepwalking.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

    1. "The Expendables 2," $13.5 million.

    2. "The Bourne Legacy," $9.3 million.

    3. "ParaNorman," $8.5 million.

    4. "The Campaign," $7.4 million.

    5. "The Dark Knight Rises," $7.2 million ($15.3 million international).

    6. "The Odd Life of Timothy Green," $7.1 million.

    7. "Premium Rush," $6.3 million.

    8. "2016: Obama's America," $6.2 million.

    9. "Hope Springs," $6 million.

    10. "Hit & Run," $4.7 million.

Saskatoon Veterinarian Completes Additional Training in Exotic ...

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan, Aug. 26, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) ? Saskatoon veterinarian Dr. Cairo Parker of the Westward Animal Hospital recently completed one year of additional training in exotic animal medicine at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. According to the veterinarian, this training allows her to broaden the scope of service of the animal hospital, including the treatment of small animal species, such as rabbits, birds, reptiles, ferrets, rodents and cats and dogs.

To broaden her scope in small animal medical care, Dr. Cairo Parker, a Saskatoon veterinarian with the Westward Animal Hospital, has completed a one-year internship in exotic animal medicine.

At the animal hospital, Dr. Parker treats cats and dogs as well as birds, reptiles, rabbits, ferrets and rodents. ?So that Westward Animal Hospital can be of greater service to the pet owning population of the Saskatoon area, I made it a priority to expand our scope of pet service. Many of our dog and cat clients also own exotic animal species, and it?s a benefit for them to be able to obtain care for all of their animals at one location. Plus, the popularity of exotic animals just continues to grow, and people are finding it difficult to find a veterinarian qualified in exotic animal care.?

Like dogs and cats, exotic pets need regular veterinary care, Dr. Parker said. This includes preventive care to help them stay healthy. Because they live in cages or other enclosed environments exotic animals can experience different health challenges than do dogs and cats.

Dr. Parker advises exotic pet owners on a variety of pet care practices that can help promote good health and lower the risk of disease, including proper nutrition, bedding, housing, lighting, heat and humidity and general maintenance of the pet?s home. Each species has unique needs, and Dr. Parker helps owners understand them for a more positive experience for the owner and pet.

She provides a range of medical and surgical care for exotic animals as well as examinations, nutritional counseling, special diets, and special services like nail, beak and wing trimming.

Behavioral counseling is another part of exotic animal care in the case of medical problems related to anxiety. An example of this is birds that pick their feathers, according to the pet hospital.

Dr. Parker also offers a range of medical and preventive care pet service for animals at all stages of life at Westward Animal Hospital. Pet owners can use the appointment request form on the Westward Animal Hospital?s website, http://westwardanimalhospital.com or call the hospital to schedule an appointment.

Dr. Cairo Parker and the Westward Animal Hospital provide a range of veterinary services for small animal species, including exotic animals.

Apple's Patent Win Could Alter Landscape Of Smartphone Industry ...

Filed by KOSU News in Business.
    August 25, 2012

The dust has yet to settle on Apple?s patent lawsuit victory over electronics giant Samsung on Friday. Samsung, who must pay over $1 billion in damages to Apple, has said that it will ask the court to overturn the verdict, but if that proves unsuccessful, will likely appeal to a higher court.

?This decision should not be allowed to stand because it would discourage innovation and limit the rights of consumers to make choices for themselves,? Samsung lead lawyer John Quinn told the Associated Press.

Whether that?s true or not, the verdict sends a message through the smartphone industry that other manufacturers will need to re-think their designs to be less Apple-like, or risk legal repercussions.

Robert W. Dickerson Jr., a lawyer who is the head of the West Coast intellectual property practice for Dickstein Shapiro, a patent law firm not involved in the Samsung-Apple case, told the New York Times that:

?Companies in the future are going to have to consider how much they want their product to look and feel like their competitors? products in terms of shape, size, the way it feels, the way it looks, how the icons are similar, or will the icons be quite dissimilar.?

Additional fallout from the case could be what the Wall Street Journal calls, the Apple tax. Competing device makers would have to license the technologies Apple sought to protect in the suit, which would add to the manufacturing cost of those products.

That additional cost could eventually find its way to consumers.

?During the trial, Apple executives testified that the company was willing to license some of its patents to Samsung. In October 2010, Apple offered to license its portfolio of patents to Samsung provided the Korean company was willing to pay about $30 per smartphone and $40 per tablet.

    ?

The verdict doesn?t necessarily mean that consumers will end up shelling out more for devices from Samsung or other makers of Android devices that use similar Apple technologies. The potential extra cost could be swallowed in part by manufacturers or wireless carriers. However, [IDC analyst Al Hilwa] said that ?in the end I think the consumer will pay more.??

Though not involved in the lawsuit, Google, maker of the popular Android operating system that powers many smartphones in the marketplace including Samsung?s, was also a target. If other makers of cellphones fear lawsuits from Apple, they could shy away from choosing Android to power their phones.

?It has got to create some concern for that ecosystem,? Baird analyst William Power said. ?The legal risks are bound to make a manufacturer think twice.?

Aside from Apple of course, another big winner in the case could turn out to be Microsoft, according to Mashable?s Peter Pachal. Microsoft?s Windows Phone, produced by partner Nokia, has a distinctly different look and feel than the iPhone and this might be their opportunity to gain some market share.

?Windows Phone is extremely attractive, particularly now. With the launch of Windows 8, Microsoft will unite its desktop/tablet and phone operating systems with shared code. That means it?s going to be incredible easy for developers to make apps that work across all Windows machines. Windows Phone also has a clear hardware leader in Nokia, so other manufacturers will never have to worry about being the only one carrying the torch.

On top of that, the OS is actually good. Windows Phones are generally well reviewed by both influencers and consumers. Criticisms generally focus on the lack of support for better hardware, but Windows Phone 8 will change that. True, its app catalog is nowhere near as robust as iOS?s or Android?s, but that gap could close quickly with the boost it gets from Windows 8 developers.?

Nokia, having been in the cellphone business for a time, also has its own portfolio of patents to protect itself.

A followup preliminary hearing on injunctions based on the verdict is scheduled for September 20. Considering that some of Samsung?s phones that were found to infringe on Apple?s patents are currently on sale, the potential for sale bans is not out of the realm of possibilities. (AP) ? A huge explosion rocked Venezuela's biggest oil refinery and unleashed a ferocious fire Saturday, killing at least 26 people and injuring more than 80 others in the deadliest disaster in memory for the country's key oil industry.

Balls of fire rose over the Amuay refinery, one of the largest in the world, in video posted on the Internet by people who were nearby at the time. Government officials pledged to restart the refinery within two days and said the country has plenty of fuel supplies on hand to meet its domestic needs as well as its export commitments.

At least 86 people were injured, nine of them seriously, Health Minister Eugenia Sader said at a hospital where the wounded were taken. She said 77 people suffered light injuries and were released from the hospital.

Officials said those killed included a 10-year-old boy, and that 17 of the 26 victims were National Guard troops stationed at a post next to the refinery.

President Hugo Chavez declared three days of mourning in the country.

"This affects all of us," Chavez said by phone on state television. "It's very sad, very painful."

Chavez said he ordered a "deep investigation" to determine what caused the explosion.

Vice President Elias Jaua, who traveled to the area in western Venezuela, said the authorities tried "to save the greatest number of lives."

Officials said firefighters had controlled the flames at the refinery on the Paraguana Peninsula, where clouds of dark smoke were still billowing at noon.

Oil Minister Rafael Ramirez said the state oil company should be able to "restart operations in a maximum of two days."

"We have sufficient supplies... in the entire country, and our production at the maximum to deal with any situation in our domestic market," Ramirez said. "In that sense, we won't have major effects."

An official of the state oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela SA, said the country also has enough supplies on hand to guarantee its international supply commitments. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

The blast occurred about 1:15 a.m. when a gas leak created a cloud that ignited, Ramirez said. An adjacent National Guard post was severely damaged by the blast, along with nearby homes, he said.

"That gas generated a cloud that later exploded and has caused fires in at least two tanks of the refinery and surrounding areas," Ramirez said. "The blast wave was of a significant magnitude."

Images in the early hours after the explosion showed the flames casting an orange glow against the night sky. One photograph showed an injured man being wheeled away on a stretcher.

"The areas that had to be evacuated were evacuated," Falcon state Gov. Stella Lugo said on television, according to the state-run Venezuelan News Agency. "The situation is controlled. Of course there's still a fire rising very high, but ... the specialists tell me there is no risk of another explosion."

Ramirez said a panel of investigators was being formed to investigate the cause of the gas leak. A prosecutor also was appointed to lead the investigation. Troops were deployed to the area.

Ramirez said that nine storage tanks were damaged. He said supplies of fuel had been cut off to part of the refinery, and that the fire had been brought under control, though the flames continued to burn up fuel in some of the tanks.

Firefighters were using foam to extinguish the flames in one of the remaining tanks, Ramirez said.

"This regrettable and sad event is controlled, is under control," Ramirez said on television, while plumes of smoke continued to rise from the refinery.

Amuay is part of the Paraguana Refinery Complex, which also includes the adjacent Cardon refinery. Together, the two refineries process about 900,000 barrels of crude per day and 200,000 barrels of gasoline. Venezuela is a major supplier of oil to the U.S. and a member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.

While the cause of Saturday's disaster remained unclear, some critics of President Hugo Chavez's government have recently pointed to increasing numbers of smaller accidents and spills as an indication of problems within the state-run company known as PDVSA.

"This tragedy is probably the worst one the oil industry has had in many years. Accidents happen, of course, although the problem with PDVSA is the inordinate amount of accidents that have taken place during the last years," said Gustavo Coronel, an energy consultant and former executive of PDVSA. Considering that record overall, Coronel said, "we are not talking about bad luck but about lack of maintenance and inept management."

Deadly accidents also occurred in Venezuela's oil and natural gas industry in the past. In 1993, a natural gas pipeline exploded beneath highway in Las Tejerias, engulfing a passenger bus and cars. Officials said 36 people were killed.

On Saturday morning, Ramirez said the explosion occurred in an area of the refinery where storage tanks are located. On television, he showed an aerial map of the rows of tanks where the flames raged.

"All of the events happened very quickly," he said. "When we got here in the middle of the night, at 3 or 3:30 in the morning, the fire was at its peak."
