BERLIN ? "Stress test" has beaten out "leverage" in the race to become Germany's word of the year as the deepening debt crisis makes its mark on the language.
The Society for German Language said Friday that "stress test" won its jury's vote because it was applied this year not just to banks but to nuclear power plants and other things. It said the term has become a "firm component of everyday language."
Three of the top five finishers were flavored by the financial crisis. The No. 2 word, "leverage," refers to European leaders' efforts to increase the firepower of their bailout fund.
"Merkozy" ? a nickname used for German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy in the crisis ? was No. 4.
"Arabellion" finished third and "Fukushima," Japan's stricken nuclear plant, placed fifth.
