Bayern Munich coach Josef Jupp Heynckes needs no introduction. As a member of the German national team, he had won the European Championships and also the World Cup, though he featured for only half a game during the tournament.

As a manager he led Bayern Munich to two German championships and Real Madrid to the UEFA Champions League in 1997-98.

Now as a coach of Bayern Munich, Jupp is looking forward to the Audi Football Summit match between Bayern Munich and India XI in New Delhi on Jan 10 which will also be Indian legend Baichung Bhutia's farewell match.

In an exclusive interview with TOI he said that he will have one regret, that he won't be able to visit the Taj Mahal due to their tight schedule.

But he said that he will take this opportunity to learn as much about Indian football as he can. Excerpts

How would you look back at your three stints with FC Bayern Munich?

Each of these three times it has been exciting and thrilling. On my first assignment we won the German Bundesliga title twice, in my five-week return in 2009 we ensured Champions League qualification.

How do you look at your transformation from a player to a top coach?

It is very important for me to have been a player. I can put myself into the shoes of the players, I understand the players, what they think, what they feel. That is very important for my work.

From Pele to the 'Kaiser', then Maradona, and now Messi, how do you rate them?

It is difficult to compare. All these players were great in their time. But the game has become quicker, the opponents don't give you much space. This is something which Pele and Beckenbauer have never ever experienced. But even in today's football with their class they would be great players.

What are your expectations from the India visit?

India will be a great experience for us. We are coming to India after a week long training camp in Qatar, we will want to show quality football and want to present ourselves in the best possible manner. I would like to utilise the opportunity to learn more about Indian football.
